Education
The recent development of various
information
technology in the world had
many possibilities of learning. E-learning is the new way of learning with the blend of new electronic media and technologies as a medium of teaching and learning for better communication and interaction with the aim of better understanding and learning (Sangra, Vlachopoulos & Cabrera, 2012,
p
. 152). Before the hype of technologies, learning was delivered in the same physical location at the fixed
time
between tutors and students.
This
essay will discuss the pros and cons of both views. In my opinion, e-learning has more benefits than traditional education.
Flexibility is one of the key benefits of e-learning. Thompson (as cited in Gilbert, 2015,
p
. 6)
that e-learning is successful for students who preferred to learn at a certain
time
and place
that is
well-suited with their learning needs. People can access
information
from various sources with the help of the internet.
Furthermore
, it has played a vital role for students who have limited
time
in hand to attend traditional learning.
Secondly
, e-learning is cost-effective as it offers a wide range of
information
to a larger number of students. The cost related to facilitators,
travelingthe act of going from one place to another
, buildings, academic staffs, and textbooks are eliminated (Arkorful, & Abaidoo, 2014,
p
. 401).
Despite its advantage, e-learning
also
has some disadvantages. The major issue in e-learning is academic dishonesty. With inadequate knowledge or skills, learners
in unethical activities
such
as cheating, misleading to piracy and plagiarisms (Arkorful & Abaidoo, 2014,
p
. 403).
In addition
, e-learning weakens the sense of belonging and relatedness between peers which often implies fewer communication skills in learners (Arkorful & Abaidoo, 2014,
p
. 403). All the learning process is delivered through online,
hence
learner is bound to learn through virtually only. The absence of
such
social interactions can have negative effects on the learning process and result in poor academic results.
On the other hand
, Traditional learning has been the learning yardstick for centuries.
Firstly
, traditional learning takes place in closed boundaries which allows learners to interact between peers and tutors. Ewing (as cited in Engholm, 2001, para. 51) shows that traditional learning helps to
a sense of belonging and community among the learners. It helps to focus on communication between learners and the sharing of ideas with the aid of people throughout the learning institution.
Secondly
, mostly face-to-face learning has more control over fraudulent in the assessments. The reason behind
this
is due to the proximity between tutor and is on constant scrutiny which does not allow learners to cheat in their paper.
In contrast
, the cost of traditional learning is comparatively higher than e-learning. The cost associated with tuitions, travels, books and study materials is usually expensive. Learners must be willing to trade off these costs in the exchange for learning.
Additionally
, a part-
time
learner finds burdensome to allocate
time
for learning and maintaining flying grades.
Secondly
, Traditional learning is delivered within a certain
time
and place with fixed curriculums. Learners are inclined to learn only what tutor feeds them.
Furthermore
, students are obligated to learn
they have no interest in some subjects.
Thus
, flexibility in learners
captive;
consequently
, reduce their learning productivity.
To conclude, increasing research and development in the area of
information
technology
subsequently
raised
for e-learning despite some people argues that traditional education is irreplaceable.
