Overall, the UK had the highest CO2 emissions throughout the period, while Portugal had the lowest. In 1967, the United Kingdom and Sweden had the highest levels of CO2 emissions. However, over the 40-year span, emissions decreased for both countries. In the UK, CO2 emissions declined slightly until 1977, followed by a more gradual decrease until 2007. Sweden experienced an increase in emissions, rising from around 8.5 to just over 10 metric tons by 1977, after which emissions dropped sharply, falling to less than 6 metric tons by 2007. In contrast, CO2 emissions in Italy and Portugal increased over the period. Italy saw a sharp rise in emissions between 1967 and 1977, followed by more gradual growth. Portugal’s emissions also surged dramatically until 1997, then continued to rise steadily until 2007. In conclusion, despite increasing awareness of environmental issues, the UK remained the largest CO2 emitter among the four countries in 2007, while Portugal remained the least polluting.

In detail, the number of visitors staying on island remained steady at 0.75 million in 2010 and 2011, after which there is a significant grow in 2013 with the figure twice as large as that in 2010. Then the number levelled out at 1.5 million despite a drop in 2016. In addition, there was a different trend among the tourists who staied on cruist ships: after a fluctuation between 0.25 million and 0.5 billion for 3 years, it climbed gradually during the rest peroid to 2 million, overtaking the figure for those mentioned above in 2016.

Many developed countries enjoy stable economies, robust welfare systems, and well-organized administrative capacities. These advantages enable them to provide the basic necessities of life—shelter, food, and healthcare—without significantly straining national budgets. For example, Germany has successfully integrated over a million Syrian refugees in recent years, showing that large-scale humanitarian assistance is achievable with sufficient planning and investment. Moreover, offering aid to refugees aligns with international human rights obligations and moral responsibility. Refugees are often victims of circumstances beyond their control, such as war or persecution. Turning them away contradicts the principles of humanity and solidarity that many wealthy nations claim to uphold. By sharing the burden more equitably, developed countries can promote global stability and reduce the strain on neighboring developing countries, which often bear the brunt of refugee crises. In conclusion, I firmly believe that wealthy countries should do more to support refugees by accepting greater numbers and ensuring they receive basic assistance. This approach not only reflects moral and humanitarian values but also contributes to a more balanced and compassionate global community.
