In today’s fast-paced world, there is an exponential increase in the global population, as compared to the past centuries.
This
results in a high demand for food to feed the massive numbers. Henceforth, with the help of science, researchers have come up with Genetically Modified (GM) foods to take up the challenge of ensuring food security in the near future.
Although
GM foods seem like a viable method to produce products, I believe that there are underlying effects to these modified consumables and
thus
, have other methods to overcome
this
issue.
Certainly, genetically modifying foods seem to enable crops to grow at a faster rate, allowing farmers to yield these vegetables for consumption.
For example
, the substances found in tomatoes are often extracted out to produce fresh new stocks.
Besides
, scientists inject chemicals into these foods to not only allow them to grow quickly but
also
resistant to pests.
This
way, these consumables are not considered as wastage and are readily available to feed all, meeting the requirements of consumers.
Yet,
such
measures come at great costs as it is expensive to produce agriculture.
For instance
, the extraction and injection of fluids from these crops require massive amounts of money. In the aforementioned points, some of the crops grown have chemicals found in them and when consumed, can cause allergies to customers in the market. Undeniably, since it is expensive because of the procedures conducted, GM foods may not appeal to the majority, resulting in farmers suffering a huge loss as the production cost might amount to more than the number of foods sold in their businesses. Clearly, GM foods may not be the best solution.
Furthermore
, many prefer exporting and importing consumables from one country to another. To exemplify, Singapore is a small country and do not have adequate spaces to grow agriculture and distribute to the citizens. Undoubtedly, Singapore is not an ideal environment
produce to grow,
hence
many may argue that GM foods might be a way to feed the citizens.
However
, no reports have certified GM foods are safe for consumption. Ultimately, importing foods from countries
such
as Japan and Korea seems like a plausible and cheaper way to go about serving the ever-swelling numbers. After all, GM foods may not be the most desirable measure to resolve the concern.
To conclude, I feel that to say feeding the world population with GM foods solves the problem is to make a sweeping statement that does not apply in all cases. It appears that GM foods can be pricey and harmful to our health as we are uncertain of the chemicals used.
Instead
, officials in various countries ought to be quick in coming up with solutions that are safe to meet the demands of the ever-growing population.
Therefore
, by preventing food scarcity, it will not be an issue that affects the status of the country.
