Some people think that zoos are all cruel and should be closed down. Others however believe that zoos can be useful in protecting wild animals. Discuss both opinions and give your own opinion.

It is thought by some that zoos play an important role in wildlife conservation.
Nevertheless
, I believe that the cruelty that animals suffer while in captivity outweighs

and
therefore
zoos should be shut down. One the one hand, there are undeniable benefits to keeping animals in zoos.
First
of all, it must be recognized that these institutions protect endangered species from the pressure of habitat loss caused by deforestation and poaching.
This
means that zoos provide them a safe habitat and medical care as well as a nurturing environment. In fact, many animals on the brink of extinction have been saved by zoos, examples include pandas or rhinos. Another advantage of zoos is that they create awareness among the public about the nature of animals and educate people about animal protection. By visiting a zoo, individuals and families may gain emotional ties to wildlife and
therefore
are more willing to participate in conservation initiatives.
On the other hand
, I believe that it is cruel to keep animals in captivity for several reasons.
Firstly
, there are animals that are not under threat and are merely kept in zoos for the purpose of visitors’ entertainment. While it may be entertaining and educational for people to see animals in the zoo, many animals are distressed because zoos cannot provide them the amount of space they have in the wild, especially those who roam larger distances in their natural habitat
such
as tigers or leopards.
Secondly
, since captive animals, especially predators, do not have the natural

needed to survive in the wild
such
as hunting skills, they often die prematurely when returned to the wild. In conclusion, while captive programs provide protection for endangered species and help raise the public’s awareness of wildlife conservation, I believe that it is cruel to capture animals and put them into an enclosed space.
