In 1960, the proportion of inhabitants who walked to and from work was highest, at around 35%. The figures for bike and bus were lower, at approximately 25% and 18%, respectively. Motor vehicles, however, accounted for the lowest proportion, at just over 5%. The period between 1960 and 2000 witnessed a rapid climb in the proportion of city-dwellers commuting by automobile, reaching a peak of over 35%.
