Many governments think that economic progress is their important goal. Some people, however, think that other types of progress are equally important for a country. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

People have different views about how government should measure their countries’
progress
. While economic
progress
is of course essential, I agree with those who believe that other measures are just as important. There are three key reasons why economic growth is seen as a fundamental goal for

Secondly
, economic
progress
ensures that more money is available for government to spend on infrastructure and public services.

Finally
, a strong economy can help a country’s standing on global stage, in term of its political influence and trading power.
However
, I would argue that various other forms of
progress
are just as significant as the economic factors mentioned above.
In particular
, we should consider the area of social justice, human rights,

and democracy itself.
For example
, the treatment of minority groups is often seen as a reflection of the moral standards and level development of a society. Perhaps, another key when judging the
progress
of a modern country should be how well the country protects the natural environment, and whether it is moving towards environmental sustainability. Alternatively, the success of a nation could be measured by looking at the health, well-being and happiness of its residents. In conclusion, the economy is obviously a key marker of a country’ success, but social, environmental and health criteria are equally significant.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Summary
  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

Example:

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Start your conclusion with a linking phrase. Here are some examples:

  • In conclusion
  • To conclude
  • To summarize
  • Finally
  • In a nutshell
  • In general
