Employment takes a central part of adult
life
. It is what we are all preparing for in our childhood and early adulthood years and it is the penultimate goal of the education system, from school to university – to make us better employees and, in some, to spark the entrepreneurial flame. In some cases, it is the level of technology we have reached so far, in others it is the specifics of the
work
, but most of us are required to be present in an office
that is
in a separate place from our home at least a few days a week.
Nowadays people
ever more
time
at
work
and
this
has both its advantages and disadvantages. I am going to discuss them below.
On the
one
hand, the landscape for employers and employees is changing, long gone is the
job
security of the past, long gone is the
time
when
one
usually works for
one
employer for their whole lives. Even countries that have until recently been very conservative in that regard,
such
as Japan, are
also
changing and adopting the western style of more frequent movements of employees from
one
workplace to another.
This
changing landscape is
also
changing the way employees are perceiving their place at
work
. In
this
regard it is advantageous to spend more
time
at
work
, in order to remain valuable to the firm and secure their position. By doing so, an employee can show not only that they are sufficiently capable professionally, but
also
that they are committed to the
job
and the workplace.
Spending more
time
at
work
could be tied not only to progression at
work
that leads to more income and the
life
improvements that follow. Ever more employers are improving the social incentives for their employees,
such
as various activities and events that are taking place after
work
hours. They serve to boost team morale and can improve the
work
environment by growing the interpersonal relationships between employees.
On the other hand
, the working hours vary between industries and the
job
itself might be
from the employee
a minimum to spend more
time
at
work
. Investment banking is a good example
this
– jobs in
this
area regularly demand over 18 hours of the
emploee’sSuggestion
employee’s
employees’
employees
time
per day with the sole promise of a very good
renumerationsomething that remunerates
package. Using
this
example, the pressure
one
is at for prolonged periods can lead to serious health and psychological problems. The stress and the anxiety of the
job
, coupled with not enough
time
to rest, recover and do other activities,
besides
work
, can be very damaging in the long term.
Being at
work
for
time
each day
also
means that
one
has less
time
for friends and family. When
one
grows older, it is usually harder for them to build new relationships and maintain their existing ones. Spending
time
with the important people in
one
’s
life
is very rewarding in the sense of
one
’s satisfaction and happiness.
Concluding, spending more
time
at
work
is sometimes inevitable or is sometimes linked to
job
satisfaction and progression. In my opinion, it is beneficial if it is done with care, in order to not be damaging to
one
’s personal
life
and relationships. Maintaining a healthy
work
-
life
balance, I believe, is key in leading a healthy lifestyle.
