We are living in a materialistic world. Some commodities are necessities, some are luxurious and some we buy in "rat race". Yes, "rat race" suits best for the things we buy because they are sold to us not because we want to buy them. The credit for
this
not so thoughtful buying goes to the sales or advertising professionals. I am of the opinion that advertising encourages us to buy things that we really do not need. There are two sayings - "
First
impression is the
last
impression" and "Fear can make a man do anything". These are not just plain English phrases, but in today's era, they have become the tag line for advertising. The professionals in the field of advertising are known to advantage of them. Life insurance,
for example
, is sold out of human fear to die or the casualties that will be caused if a person meets with an accident. Even in the field of information technology, database and data analytics companies sell their solutions by instilling in the fear of the consequences of loosing data if the system crashes. Green tea is another example. There are a few who know the benefits of green tea. But a very large section of the society consumes green tea because the most commonly used tag line for advertising is "You lose weight". I too once bought beautiful wine glasses from a department store. I knew I didn't drink, but still I added the same to my basket. Just because they looked so classy.
Also
, the salesperson somehow convinced me that I won't get
such
beautiful wine glasses at
such
an affordable price. According to a study, a person's brain is the most vulnerable after 10:30 PM or 11 PM and he can be convinced to buy anything at that time.
That is
actually one
such
reason that all the sale programs are broadcasted on television after 11 PM. So advertising or sales is all about the efficiency to present the product in a manner that the customer feels that the product is the best and nobody else can sell him the product at
such
an affordable price.
