Some people believe that young people benefit from working while studying at school or university. Others think that young people will achieve more by focussing on their studies. Discuss both of the view points and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. days?

Over
time
, the cost of attending university has risen dramatically, making it necessary for many students to supplement savings and parental help with part-
time
jobs while studying. There are those who believe there are benefits to working while studying, while others believe that focussing on schoolwork is paramount. The key merits of both viewpoints are discussed below, along with my own views on the subject.
Firstly
, there are benefits to young people working and studying simultaneously. The main positive outcome of a student holding a part-
time
job is that the subsequent income allows them to pay for some or all of their
school
costs, lowering their debt burden upon graduation. A lower debt burden, in turn, frees up students to pursue their passion rather than selecting the highest paid jobs post graduation. A secondary benefit is that working while studying builds up valuable
experience
, which makes working students more competitive once they enter the workforce full-
time
. The ability to graduate with lower debt and with broader
work
experience
are clear benefits of working while studying.
Conversely
, there are benefits to foregoing any part-
time
work
and focussing solely on studying. Any non-
school
work
will take away valuable
time
from study and research, which may
then
cause grades to suffer. The resultant lower grades may bar students from entering postgraduate programs, certain job types, or even cause repetition of certain courses.
In addition
to negatively impacting grades, spending
time
at
work
can impinge on participation in student social activities
such
as clubs and sports, which are an important part of the university
experience
. Foregoing part-
time
work
during studies can have a positive impact on grades, as well as provide students a fuller and more satisfying post-secondary
experience
. My opinion borrows from both sides of the argument. I believe that if students have the means, they should focus on
study

studies
during the
school
year, leaving any free
time
for extracurricular activities.
However
, during
school
holidays, a summer job would definitely help alleviate a student's financial burden and accrue important
experience
for future roles. In summary, it is difficult to ignore the rising costs of attending university, which often needs to be offset by additional income, sometimes in the form of part-
time
work
during studies. There are obvious financial and
work

benefits to pursuing employment while at

. As a nation, we should examine ways to lower the expense required to attain a tertiary education, which would enable students to focus on full-
time
study.
