Society would benefit from a ban on all forms of advertising because it serves no useful purpose, and can even be damaging. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Advertising has long become part of our daily lives, with a wide range of advertisements appearing in public places or

media.
However
, some people argue that it is rather pointless and even harmful, and
thus
there should be a comprehensive prohibition of advertising in all
forms
for a
society
to thrive. In my view, I partly agree with
this
proposal. It could be argued that some
forms
of advertising can be generally detrimental.
To begin
with, some adverts can manipulate
customers
into making impulsive purchases by deliberately presenting overly fabulous pictures of a particular product compared to its real appearance. Several commercials even include false descriptions in order to appeal to
customers
.
In addition
, it is rather inevitable that inappropriate advertisements with sexually explicit content appear on television or other
forms
of modern media, and they could eventually reach the younger audience who are most vulnerable to
this
.
Thus
, advertising can have negative impacts on us as a
society
.
Nevertheless
, banning all
forms
of advertising would yield dire consequences for our
society
.
First
,
although
some adverts can be misleading and sexually sensitive, there are still many good ones that are of great help to
customers
. In fact, they play a key role in demonstrating key features of a product,
thus
enabling us to know whether it suits us best. Without
this
, it is easy to get lost among thousands of products and eventually spend our money unwisely.
Moreover
, once commercials, by law, undergo a prohibitive order, sales can decline dramatically as they have long been considered to be a useful way to attract
customers
and generate profits for a business.
This
would become worse when the government has to step in to bail the company out by providing temporary financial support, both for the industry and the people relying on it as a source of income.
In other words
, banning all
forms
of commercial communication could drag down the whole economy and put a great deal of pressure on the authorities. Clearly,
such
a proposal would do harm to both
customers
and
society
as a whole. In conclusion,
although
some advertisements are manipulative and misleading, banning all
forms
would lead to reverse and undesired implications on
society
. I personally believe that as adverts are here to stay, other measures,
such
as imposing stricter punishments on companies that employ inappropriate content to appeal to
customers
, are much more efficient.

Support ideas with relevant, specific examples

Examples make your writing easier to understand by illustrating points more effectively.

Examples, if used properly, not only help you get higher marks for ‘Task Response’ but also for ‘Coherence’.

When giving examples it is best to put them after your main idea or topic sentence. They can be used in the middle of supporting sentences or they can be used to start a new sentence. There is no rule for where exactly to give examples in essays, logically they would come after your main idea/topic sentence or just after a supporting sentence.

Linking words for giving examples:

  • for example
  • for instance
  • to illustrate this
  • to give a clear example
  • such as
  • namely
  • to illustrate
  • take, for example
