In some countries, some criminal trials in law courts are shown on television so that the general public can watch them. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Across the globe, while most countries usually hold criminal trials behind closed doors, others broadcast legal
proceedings
on television for the general public. I will discuss
further
how its advantages outweigh the
disadvantages
. Most people think that televising live criminal court
proceedings
has its benefits.
Firstly
, it shows the transparency of the country’s legal system

It allows the public the right to information. They can have access to the details of the trials so they can form their own opinion.
This
is important in countries where the government restricts public access to information. An example is in the case of O.J Simpson, a national football player charged with murdering his wife.
Although
he is a national celebrity, the general public can rest assured that he will be given a fair trial.
Secondly
, it strengthens the people’s faith and trust in the country’s legal system, and the Constitution. People will get to know and understand the rule of law and the judicial process. Any act of violence will not be tolerated and comes with a price.
Conversely
, showcasing court cases on television does not come without any flaws. Close relatives of the defendant may be stigmatised as a consequence of the offender’s actions Families of the perpetrator will have to bear the emotional difficulties throughout the
proceedings
.
However
, psychological support can be provided to help the families deal with any backlash from the public.
Furthermore
, children who watch the
proceedings
on-air may be exposed to the violence and unwanted trauma from the crime scene.
Nevertheless
,
this
drawback can be reduced if children are restricted from the courtroom. In conclusion, there are both advantages and
disadvantages
of showing criminal trials on TV, but I believe the benefits outweigh the
disadvantages
. The
disadvantages
can be prevented by the steps mentioned above.

Support ideas with relevant, specific examples

Examples make your writing easier to understand by illustrating points more effectively.

Examples, if used properly, not only help you get higher marks for ‘Task Response’ but also for ‘Coherence’.

When giving examples it is best to put them after your main idea or topic sentence. They can be used in the middle of supporting sentences or they can be used to start a new sentence. There is no rule for where exactly to give examples in essays, logically they would come after your main idea/topic sentence or just after a supporting sentence.

Linking words for giving examples:

  • for example
  • for instance
  • to illustrate this
  • to give a clear example
  • such as
  • namely
  • to illustrate
  • take, for example
