Large cities are usually populated with new immigrants who come in search of a job or in the hope of building a new life for themselves and their families. Most of these
people
choose to stay in
apartments
at least for the
first
year until they get familiarized with the new place.
Apartments
and condominiums offer a convenient place for bachelors and families to live. While there are several advantages to
this
situation, there are a few disadvantages. In my personal opinion, there are more merits than demerits to the same.
The main advantage of
apartments
is that most of them can be rented.
This
lifts a huge financial burden from the shoulders of newcomers. When someone
first
arrives in a city, they usually do not have the financial backup to buy a
house
. The downpayment for a rental
apartment
is much lesser than that for a
house
. Now in some cases, even if they have money to invest in buying a
house
, they might not have friends or acquaintances to help them with the tedious process of
house
hunting. In
such
cases, it is so much easier for a person to walk into an
apartment
community and get the formalities sorted with the managers there. Apart from
this
,
apartments
usually offer all essential amenities
such
as fully equipped gymnasiums, recreational areas, meeting rooms, barbeque
facilities
for small gatherings, pool
facilities
and so much more.
This
is very helpful for
people
. Most
apartment
complexes are built close to public
facilities
such
as subway stations, pharmacies, clinics, grocery stores etc.
This
is an added convenience ,especially for
people
who do not own their own cars. Residential spaces built into high-rise buildings accommodate a large number of
people
using a relatively small amount of land. It is impossible to build individual houses with large or even small backyards and frontage in a large city because of the sheer lack of land availability.
Hence
, these
facilities
tackle the major issue of space problems.
However
, the disadvantage of
this
type of residence is that you feel locked up inside the four walls. Most old
apartments
in Toronto downtown do not have balconies or even a window that can be fully opened. There is no fresh air coming in ever in these
apartments
.
This
is especially difficult for
people
who love to live close to nature. You feel so disconnected from nature. Social isolation is another disadvantage of living in these buildings. There is very less or rather no opportunity for any type of social get-togethers here.
People
seldom know their
next
-door neighbours.
Hence
this
type of living is not healthy in the long run.
Hence
, to summarize,
apartment
living has both advantages and disadvantages
however
, in my opinion, the former outweighs the latter.
Also
, it ultimately boils down to the personal preferences of individual
people
and families to choose an ideal living space for themselves.
