Many governments think that economic progress is their most important goal. Some people, however, think that other types of progress are equally important for a country. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

In today’s world, most national governments prioritise economic
growth
over other forms of
growth
, while some people argue the development of other areas of life and society are of greater or equal
importance
. In

I will analyse both views in order to formulate and explain my own. On the one hand, many states think that if they promote and maintain strong economies, it will enable widespread progress across all areas of society,
such
as healthcare, education, national defence infrastructure and culture. From
this
perspective, wealthier or more financially stable countries are in a better position to provide free and accessible services to the general population,
such
as free healthcare, education and public transport. In England
for example
, where economic
growth
is of utmost
importance
to the government, The National Health Service is able to deliver free medical care to anyone who needs it.
Consequently
,
this
reinforces not only the government’s prerogative to prioritise financial
growth
, but
also
increases popular support for
such
an approach.
In contrast
, other people argue that economic
growth
is not the single most important thing and that other fields should be granted equal
importance
. One reason for
this
is that without
growth
in other fields,
such
as healthcare and education, it is not possible to achieve the desired economic
growth
. To illustrate, if a society does not produce a sufficiently educated population able to fill and perform important roles
such
as engineers, doctors, teachers and nurses, there would be no one to create or care for the value-creating infrastructure, services or workforce. In conclusion,
although
there are positive benefits to the prioritisation of economic
growth
, I am more inclined to agree with the latter point of view - that economic
growth
necessitates other sectors being granted equal
importance
and nurtured just as much, in order to to ensure people’s wellbeing and ability to participate in a fair and healthy economy.
