Some people believe that a good way to reduce crime is to have longer sentences, while others think that there are alternatives to this problem. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

I am of the personal opinion that the best way to reduce
crime
rates is through long
prison
sentences
, which have far better benefits than short ones, and there are several reasons for
such
an opinion, which I shall be elaborating on below. Basically, I believe that the government should impose long
sentences
on criminals, depending on the severity of the
crime
, in order to teach them an important life lesson.
Therefore
, long
sentences
are a more effective deterrent for criminals to know the exact consequences of the
crime
.
This
, I suppose, can be best exemplified by the fact that in research carried out by the University of Shahid Beheshti in the city of Tehran in 2007 on
crime
rates, it was observed that longer
prison
sentences
reduced the
crime
rate by 25%. Whatsmore, it has been said that the government protects society through long periods of imprisonment, and I cannot but agree with
such
an opinion, as best illustrated by an article written in the Journal of Criminal Justice in which it was stated that Society is 51% safer when criminals are incarcerated. Another point to be considered is the fact that long
sentences
allow prisoners to start a new life by receiving free education from the government in
prison
and learning productive activities, which will help individuals become motivated and start an honest life through proper means of earning.
By contrast
, I can
also
see the benefits of short
sentences
. First of all, I think that shorter
prison
sentences
can be more cost-effective than long-term imprisonment. They require fewer resources, including accommodation, food, health care, and supervision.
This
allows governments to use resources more efficiently and focus on other aspects of the criminal justice system,
such
as prevention, rehabilitation, and community-based alternatives. It is based on the abovementioned reasons that I would like to reiterate that I personally believe that the idea of long
sentences
has far better advantages than short ones.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Summary
  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

Example:

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Start your conclusion with a linking phrase. Here are some examples:

  • In conclusion
  • To conclude
  • To summarize
  • Finally
  • In a nutshell
  • In general
