Some people think history has nothing or little to tell us, but others think that studying the past history can help us better understand the present. Please discuss the two views and give your own opinion.

History
is an indispensable part of human civilization and its relevance is questioned recently. Against the opinion that
history
enables
people
better understand the present-day world, opponents deny its value, claiming that learning
history
is a waste of time. In
this
essay, I will critically analyze these two schools of thought and detail my viewpoint.
History
can be useless and meaningless when it is regarded as simple records of past events. When studying
history
,
people
are required to memorize the dates, names and relevant details, which can be easily searched in
this
information age.
Also
, the rules concluded by historical events can hardly be applied in the ever-evolving world. Another point is that
history
can be interpreted in different ways by
people
from opposite stances, rendering
history
subjective. Even though historians argue that the lessons learned from
history
can help to avoid repeated mistakes, it can be observed that similar mistakes and even tragedies have taken place in various historical backgrounds, which
further
proves the uselessness of
this
subject.
However
, despite that the effect of learning
history
is neither visible nor immediate, its profound influence should not be overlooked. Modern
people
, through understanding the stories of individuals who successfully overcame adversities , are able to form morals and values,
such
as courage and persistence. In the meantime, a sense of belonging can be stored up when we know how our family developed, evolved and interacted with historical changes. More importantly,
history
is a compulsory course in all communities, for it can strengthen citizenship. Only after learning how a nation and our ancestors struggled and survived, the younger generation can better understand the world around us and how the governmental system functions now. From a macro perspective,
history
acts as a warning sign against potential wars, atrocities and genocide. Empathy brought by sharing common suffering can gather and unite
people
together regardless of their nationalities and races. As far as I am concerned,
history
is so crucial that it completes the splendid civilization of every community and country and there are numerous wisdom and hints hidden in
history
, which can indicate our future destination and development.
