Some children spend hours every day on their smartphones. Why is this the case? Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

In today's world, it is not uncommon to see
children
and teenagers spending countless hours on their smartphones.
This
phenomenon is largely driven by the algorithms employed by popular apps, which are designed to capture and hold the attention of young users. In
this
essay, I will argue that
this
trend represents a negative
development
, primarily because it can lead to a decline in real-life social interactions. First and foremost, it is undeniable that the algorithms used in gaming, social media apps, and video platforms are meticulously designed to grab the attention of the young generation.
In other words
, these companies are skilled at delivering content that serves the curiosity of the youth, which, in turn, keeps them glued to their smartphones day and night. Since
children
are someone who not very good at self-control,
as a result
, they easily fall into the habit of scrolling through social media or playing games most of the time.
However
,
this
excessive smartphone usage should be viewed as a negative
development
due to
its substantial impact on
children
's social
development
. As these teenagers embrace modern means of communication,
such
as chatting and video calls, they often find these virtual interactions more engaging than meeting people in person. Consider a teenager, prior to the smartphone era, who used to spend evenings socializing in person, honing their communication skills. Now, they're often engrossed in smartphone chat apps and video calls with friends.
While
these digital interactions have benefits, they can't replace the depth of face-to-face connections, potentially hindering the teenager's social
development
. In conclusion,
children
evidently spend a large amount of time using their phones lately
due to
the highly effective strategies employed by app companies to engage their audience.
However
, the consequences of
this
trend should be considered as a negative effect, especially when it leads to a decline in real-world social conversations.
