The table below gives information about the number of male, female and total employees and
factories
in England and Wales between 1851 and 1901.
During these 50 years, male and female labour in factories
decreased: at the beginning, a large number of men worked in factories
compared to women. Both trends declined showing a final rate to about 30.000: while
men diminution showed fluctuation, women employment gradually declined.
According with gender trends, total employment felt down throughout the given period; from 1851 to 1861, there was a dramatic decline of about 100.000 employers while
from 1871 it decreased gradually with an end-point rate of 61.000.
In conclusion, opposite to employment trend, the number of factories
increase over the 50-year period from 225 to 600. An instability growth is illustrated with plateau in the first ten-year and a significant increase in the last
period although
