You are a student at an English language school and are living in private accommodation with other students from the school. You have not had hot water or heating for some time. The landlord’s workmen have tried to fix the problem but without success. Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter: state your reason for writing

I am writing on behalf of all the students at your property at 38 New Street. As you know, we have not had hot water or heating for almost two months. We appreciate that you have sent workmen to rectify the situation, but the fact is that they have been unsuccessful, despite spending a lot of time on the problems. Up to now, the focus has been on repairing the hot water boiler and the heating system.
However
, both of these are really quite old.
Therefore
, we think that the boiler and heating system need to be replaced, rather than relying on repairs that do not work or may only keep them in working order for a limited time. One of us has a friend who works part-time for a plumbing company. His friend and his colleagues have taken a look at the problem and they have provided us with a quote for the necessary work. The price seems very reasonable and they are sure that they can get the work done by the end of next week. We hope that you will agree to
this
solution as we enjoy living here and we think that you want to be as helpful as possible. Yours sincerely, Nicolas De Santos

The Greeting

Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.

Always start an informal letter in the ways:

  • Dear + name
  • Hi / Hello + name

‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.

For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:

  • Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
  • Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.
