Some people believe that teaching music in schools is a vital part of growing up and the human experience, whilst others believe that teaching music in schools is a waste of time and resources. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion

Music
is the most universal of all art forms. It soothes the soul and re energizes the spirit. People connect to others and their cultures via
music
. Modern schooling systems have incorporated
this
art form either as a main subject or as an extracurricular activity. Orthodox schooling systems consider teaching
music
to be a distraction and a waste of time, energy and resources. In
this
essay we will draw a comparison of the two. Teaching and playing
music
provide benefits to pupils beyond recreation. It unwires the students from their hectic and busy schedule. It enhances self discipline and boosts creativity. One study shows that students who play piano, perform better in mathematics and literature. It brings pupils of different ethnicities together and teaches them tolerance and goodwill. Kindergarten students, particularly enjoy theirs lessons when
music
is included. It helps build spatial intelligence and coherence of complex patterns. Old school systems believe that education should be restricted to major subjects only because extracurricular activities like
music
disengage students from their basic tasks. Students spend much more time practicing rehearsing and composing than compiling scientific data. Subjects like mathematics and science are given much more importance because they laid the foundations for future doctors, engineers and scientists.
Moreover
, in resource limited settings, it creates an undue financial burden on school administration. Given both views, I would favour inculcating
music
as part of the curriculum as the pros surpasses the cons so that students learn to express themselves via playing various instruments. It will teach them discipline, patience and enhance their skills in the sciences and literature too. It will help them be extraordinary workers rather than mediocre ones.
