Discipline plays a vital role in all-round development of children, especially while gaining an education.
However
, a lot of students seem to lack it, and the question of who is responsible for
this
is widely discussed in society. According to some people these are parents who are expected to instill
this
value, while others insist that
this
is a duty of pedagogues.
This
essay argues that
although
educators are definitely engaged in the development of self-command among students,
however
, parents have much more influence on their children by being role models.
An average student spends from 4 to 6 hours in school every day, which makes a significant part of their
time
during the day. And
this
fact apparently makes some individuals to state that teachers must be responsible not only for students’ education, but
also
for the development of children’s personalities and behavioural skills. No doubt that in order to conduct classes effectively, educators must maintain a certain level of obedience, at
this
might be considered as a part of their duties.
However
, having 30-40 pupils in class, which is normally observed in Ukraine, it is unlikely that a teacher will be able to devote the necessary attention in terms of misbehaviour to every single student as he or she is more concerned about explaining the lesson within the allotted
time
. Not speaking about the fact that each student is unique and often requires special approaches due to his or her traits of character.
But it is important to remember, that academic discipline means not only good manners and sitting in classroom quietly. It
also
includes punctuality, responsibility,
time
management and compliance with the routine.
This
brings us to the idea that parents are solely responsible for children’s behaviour both in and outside the classrooms.
Firstly
, parents spent much more
time
with their offspring than teachers and observe them from the
first
day of their lives,
thus
, perfectly know their children’s personalities and can easily find the way to get through to them.
Besides
, in the majority of families, parents are taken as role models and an undeniable authority, which makes teaching disciplined manner way easier.
For example
, as per sociological survey conducted in Kiev schools among students aged 7-18 years, 36% of pupils reported to have parents as a
authority for them, compared to 3% of respondents who mentioned teachers.
Hence
, children
more likely acquire good behavioural customs just simply observing their parents rather than listening to their Science or English teachers.
To conclude,
although
teachers certainly shape the students’ discipline, but it is extremely difficult in conditions of modern schools and society,
thus
, it should be rather seen as a supportive measure. Whereas parents have more opportunities to instill good manners and to discipline,
for instance
, leading by their own example.
