Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school Do the advantages outweigh disadvantages?
It is thought by some experts that teaching a new language should be started at the primary level in schools instead of secondary level. There are some drawbacks of introducing a language course at such an initial level. However, the benefits, such as easy gripping and brighten future perspectives, overweighs any disadvantages. On the one hand, introducing an additional class for foreign language at a junior level in schools would divert the minds of the students from compulsory subjects. It is because students might feel overburden and pressurized of learning too many things. As a result, they might lose focus on studies. For instance, many students are likely to mix mother language with a new language that can cause confusion and ineffective communication between the teacher and children. However, it is scientifically proved that a child can easily adapt and learn during his early age of life as compared to the adolescent. In other words, the learning capabilities of students are significantly high in primary institute, since the brain is in a evelopmental phase that helps them to master a new language without any difficulty. Furthermore, if a person would skill a language at junior school, he would be more confident in using that language that will assist him in future career prospects. Therefore, many countries have made English as a mandatory student from grade 1 even if it is not the official language, owing to its importance. In conclusion, even though a student’s focus might be diverted by teaching a foreign language at primary school; the likelihood of building a good professional career and the ability of children to learn quickly favours more in learning language from junior school rather than secondary school.
