With the difficulty standards of secondary schools increasing across the world,
students
are facing challenges in learning the content as well as keeping up with the competition.
Nonetheless
, a few
students
get left behind every year. I believe that streaming children in secondary school has more disadvantages than advantages. Analysing the discrimination
students
face because of
this
system
in addition
to the
skills
not being taught to these
pupils
will prove these points.
Firstly
, when adolescents are streamed into various classes solely based on their ability,
this
will create discrimination among the
students
.
Students
in advanced
courses
will start bullying the
students
in easier
courses
, in turn lowering their self-esteem. A survey conducted by the National University of Singapore in 2020, has stated that the people enrolled in the Advanced level
courses
did not treat
students
in the ordinary level
courses
equally and tended to bully them, causing these children to lose their confidence leading them to perform much worse than they would. Unfortunately, since the number of
pupils
enrolling in ordinary level
courses
is increasing every year, the number of bullying cases will only increase.
Thus
,
this
makes it clear that streaming
students
into different will only create a divide between the academically stronger and weaker
students
resulting in a drop in self-esteem in the adolescents.
Secondly
, when
pupils
are streamed into different classes based on their
skills
, they will end up missing out on a lot of
skills
. These
skills
can include anything from communication to teamwork.
For instance
, when a pupil strong in one
subject
tutors his classmate who is weak in that
subject
both
students
can gain from the experience. Not only will they gain the
subject
knowledge but
also
, the information on working together in a team and communication
skills
which can be used anywhere in their lives.
Therefore
, it is apparent that differentiation juveniles into different classes based on their strengths and weaknesses might be beneficial in the short run but in the long run, it will prove to be a drawback for them.
To sum up, when juveniles are streamed into different sections because of their strengths and weaknesses, they are often discriminated against by their peers who are in academically superior
courses
and often don’t gain the
skills
they would if they were separated. After a thorough analysis on the
subject
, it is clear that the idea of streaming freshmen into different
courses
based on their talents cannot be supported.
Hence
, it is predicted that the drawbacks of streaming
pupils
will outweigh the benefits. year as they learn at a different pace as compared to their peers.
