Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstances of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should always be taken into account when deciding on the punishment. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Identifying sentences for
people
who commit a
crime
is a controversial topic. While some
people
think that fixed punishments are a good measure for every case, I incline with those who believe that other factors
such
as the situation and the drive for breaking the law should be taken into consideration when the punishment is made. On the one hand, there are two main reasons why some
people
believe that a fixed punishment should be applied for every kind of
crime
. The
first
reason is that these kinds of punishments can help to reduce the number of
people
who intend to commit a
crime
.
This
is because
people
will understand clearly and know exactly what will happen if they commit a particular
crime
.
Therefore
, it might prevent
people
from bad behaviour. Another reason is that government can save money and resources on investigating criminal cases. These kinds of valuable resources would be better spent on education or healthcare, which might bring more benefits for the community.
On the other hand
, I agree with those who argue that it is moral for prisoners to have a chance to show their personal reasons why they break the law.
For instance
, there are many cases like murder accidentally because they are threatened, it would be unfair if the criminal is punished like the others.
In addition
, it is better to consider the motivation and drive why a person chooses to become a criminal. In many cases, the prisoners are not mature enough to distinguish right from wrong, so
this
procedure can give young
people
a chance to become good citizens in the future. In conclusion,
although
some
people
think that each
crime
should have a fixed punishment in order to reduce the
crime
rate and save valuable resources in investigation, it seems to me that the drive and circumstances of the criminal should be considered when deciding punishments.

Support ideas with relevant, specific examples

Examples make your writing easier to understand by illustrating points more effectively.

Examples, if used properly, not only help you get higher marks for ‘Task Response’ but also for ‘Coherence’.

When giving examples it is best to put them after your main idea or topic sentence. They can be used in the middle of supporting sentences or they can be used to start a new sentence. There is no rule for where exactly to give examples in essays, logically they would come after your main idea/topic sentence or just after a supporting sentence.

Linking words for giving examples:

  • for example
  • for instance
  • to illustrate this
  • to give a clear example
  • such as
  • namely
  • to illustrate
  • take, for example
