Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Crime
is a serious & growing problem in all societies.
Although
many people opine that the
crime
rate
can be reduced if criminals are sentenced to a longer duration of punishments, some people believe that finding other possible solutions to control the
crime
rate
must be explored by the government. I personally feel that the respective authorities should strive to find alternatives to reduce the
crime
rate
rather than keeping the
crime
makers in isolation for more
time
. There are some benefits of giving offenders longer lockup sentences.
Firstly
, spending a long
time
in prisons provides opportunities for the jail services to rehabilitate them and bring a notable change in their behaviour. Especially, it is difficult to bring change in assaulters who have committed serious crimes within a short
time
, so putting them in bars for a longer
time
might help to reform them to a great extent.
Moreover
, if
such
dangerous criminals are made to stay in a penitentiary for a longer duration, it helps them to reduce the
crime
rate
to a certain extent.
However
, some people argue that leaving them in confinement for a long
time
gives them a chance to mix with other criminals and their character will
further
become deteriorated. One alternative is to make work on essential service-related work . They can be trained on some aspects beneficial to the society and the revenue collected by those services can be utilized by the government to improve the facilities & technology to reduce the
crime
rate
. To illustrate, the prisoners in one of the biggest jails in Hyderabad work in petrol stations and earn money under the supervision of the jailers To sum it up, it is better for the government to find alternatives to reduce the
crime
rate
instead
of relying on giving longer punishments to the law offenders

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Summary
  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

Example:

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Start your conclusion with a linking phrase. Here are some examples:

  • In conclusion
  • To conclude
  • To summarize
  • Finally
  • In a nutshell
  • In general
