You have recently joined an evening course but you are finding it difficult to attend. Write a letter to the course coordinator. In your letter – Provide the course details. – Explain why you are finding it difficult to attend. – Suggest what could be done.
Dear Sir,
I am writing
this
letter to inform you that I will have to discontinue the part-time course “Introduction to Gerontology” which I am doing in the evening batch at DAV College, Jalandhar. However
, I would like to thank you for making the subject very interesting and I would surely like to re-enrol in the next
intake.
The reason for dropping off from my course is that my father is not well. He had done serious brain surgery and has been hospitalized and I am a single child and I have to look after him with my mother. The course in Gerontology involves caring for the elderly. Today, we belong to an ageing society and we are a part of a greying population. After doing this
subject, it would be very helpful for me in finding a job not only in the government sector but also
in the private sector. I would appreciate it if you could reserve my seat in the next
upcoming batch.
I would be very thankful to you if you could refund me half the money because I need a lot of money for my fathers’ treatment.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,

The Greeting
Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.
Always start an informal letter in the ways:
- Dear + name
- Hi / Hello + name
‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.
For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:
- Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
- Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.
