You are part of a group of musicians who meet on Tuesday and Friday evenings to practice in the community hall. You have been told, however, that it is no longer possible for the group to use the hall. Write a letter to the manager. In the letter: • describe what the group does • explain why the group is good for the community • suggest alternative days and times for practice

My name is Shikha, and I am a member of the ABC band. We have been using the TDI community hall for the
last
1 year to practice.
This
Sunday, we got a call that we cannot use the hall from now onwards. As you know, we do our practice every Tuesday and Friday evening so that we can perform on weekends. Our group performs to do charity to orphanages with the money collected from the entry fee. So, we want our group to perform till we can.
Moreover
, people
also
enjoy listening to our songs. We help them to feel relaxed and spend quality time with their family. I would request you to please allow us to keep doing rehearsals as
that is
needed. If you say we can change our days to Wednesday and Thursday it is not an issue. I hope you will look into our problem. Looking forward to your positive reply. Yours Sincerely, Shikha

The Greeting

Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.

Always start an informal letter in the ways:

  • Dear + name
  • Hi / Hello + name

‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.

For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:

  • Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
  • Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.
