In the future, nobody wiil buy printed newspapers or books because they will be able to read everything they want online without paying.
Nowadays, it has become common credence that printed publications will eventually be replaced by the internet and electronic devices. While it is highly likely to happen, I think a total replacement is not going to happen any time soon. In
this
essay, I am going to shed some light on my idea.
To commence with, paper
-based media had a monopoly in publication for an aeon. However
, this
strong foothold is slowly eroded by the advent of technology: smartphones, the internet, and gadgets like ebook readers. In the past, we needed days to proofread a book before publication. Handwritten newspapers were replaced by mechanical presses which required tedious effort to deliver a single day's story. Besides
, it would have sometimes taken from dawn to dusk to deliver the newspaper to some furthest corners of the planet, if not more. Since then
, things have changed. Everyone gets the news instantly delivered to their handheld devices as soon as it is published. The public can carry thousands of books in their pockets which was impossible to imagine just a few decades ago. Moreover
, this
modern technology allows us to search for specific news - gaze at some related data from archives, published some 10 years ago; it allows us to find the current trends, as well as, helps us to find specific data from thousands of books in a fraction of a second
. Based on this
scenario, we can clearly envision what lies ahead - the use of paper
plummets, while the use of the internet and electronic gadgets gains pace. For instance
, most of the community in my country read newspapers on smartphones already rather than in papers. I have a portion of my record in cloud storage and a kindle for reading than my bookshelf at my house.
On the contrary
, many prefer and feel more comfortable reading in papers and incessantly peering at a screen all day long. Furthermore
, reading online or on smartphones leads to violation of copyrights, sometimes making it too easy to read without having to pay the author any penny. This
leads to a financial loss for the author or newspaper publisher, which will eventually make them further
demotivated to write or publish. For example
, some authors in our country started to lose revenue when more and more population started copying digital versions illegally found online. As a result
, the publisher and writer stopped publishing newer editions of the book because it crashed their motivation. On the other hand
, for newspaper ,publishers it has become a subsidiary project to publish both online and on paper
because mere online advertisement revenue could not cover the production cost.
In nutshell, while it is natural to see paper
-based media being steadily replaced by newer technologies, this
change does not come without its cost. Firstly
, it is healthier to read on paper
than on screen. Secondly
, digital media allow illegal distribution of content without the author's permission leading to chaos for the publisher's finance. However
, I think newer tech may come in handy to help with this
problem - by protecting against illegal copying using blockchain or adding a monthly subscription fee for the readers - which is almost now a day being implemented by some newspapers for their online version. While technology may grab away most of the percentage of paper
-based books and news gradually, it can never replace the comfort of reading in a paper
, let alone the scent of opening a new novel from the library.Submitted by Burhan on
