spend in households doing housework in one country from 1920 to 2019. Overall, what stands out from the graphs is that in the beginning few
people
has electrical appliances and more time was spent on doing housework in households during the given period. Looking into the details, In 1920 around 0% of
people
have refrigerators but the percentage increased rapidly and in 1940 around 55% of
people
were having refrigerators.
This
number again increased to 90% in 1960 and touched 100% in 1980 but after that, it remain unchanged for the rest of the period.
Similarly
, in 1920 around 30% of
people
have a vacuum cleaner and
this
number increased to 50% in 1940. In the
next
40 years, there was an increase of 40% and it touched 90% in 1980. With a 10% increase, it achieved the highest level of 100% in 2000 and remain unchanged rest of the period. For Washing machines, In 1920 about 40% of
people
used them but around 70% were using them in 1960. There was a marginal change in the percentage of
people
who owned washing machines and in 2019 around 72% of
people
have them.
In contrast
, if we look into the time spent on household work, around 50
hours
were spent in 1920 and in the
next
40 years, there was a sharp decline in average working
hours
spent weekly on household work. In 1960
people
were spending around 20
hours
per week but
this
decreased to 10
hours
per week in 2019.
