You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. Your local bookshop has invited members of the public to recommend a guest speaker for an upcoming event that will include a series of talks from well-known people. Write leter to the bookshop. In your letter • suggest a speaker • say what they would contribute to the event • explain why other people would be interested too

Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing with reference to a newspaper advertisement to recommend a guest speaker for the monthly event planned at your bookshop. I believe we should invite Mr Harry Kane, the economist. He has performed various consulting roles in developing countries in the past decade to manage the economic recession. Our country is struggling to meet the basic needs of people and it may take years to recover from the current situation. Mr Kane could guide us on how to handle finances and run the family when the inflation rate is skyrocketing.
Further
, these issues are faced by people living in the vicinity. Many people would be benefited from
this
speech as it may help them to move forward during the difficult time period. If you require more details on
this
speech, we could meet and discuss it in person. Look forward to hearing your responses soon. Yours faithfully, Kyle Walker

The Greeting

Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.

Always start an informal letter in the ways:

  • Dear + name
  • Hi / Hello + name

‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.

For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:

  • Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
  • Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.
