The table provides information on the percentage of literacy by gender in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the total average of the world from 2000 to 2004. Overall, the population who can read words, including Europeans, Oceanians, and Americans were higher than the whole world,
in particular
Europeans being the highest level, whereas other areas were lower than worldwide during the period.

 The largest proportion of people understanding words was in Europe, standing at 99.2% for men and only lower 0.7% for women. The
second
most were the Americans, at 93.6% in total, just relatively higher at 0.2% than Oceanians which ranked
third
.
However
, literate males in Oceania had a bigger percentage than those in the Americas. 

In terms of Asia, literate Asians saw the greatest difference between men and women, at 85.9% and 72.5%, respectively. The lowest figure for literacy was in Africa, which took the
last
place at only 62.5% of the total average. It can be seen that just over half (53.9%) of female Africans had the ability to read.
