Some people say that the best way to improve road safety would be to increase minimum legal age for driving cars or riding motorbikes. Do you agree or disagree?
Opinions are divergent regarding whether lifting the minimum legal
age
for driving cars or riding motorbikes is the most sustainable and effective method to increase road safety
. While this
approach seems like a quick solution to the alarming rate of traffic
accidents currently facing society, it is far from the best solution.
To begin
with, there is a certain ground to increase the legal driving age
in an attempt to enhance road safety
. First
and foremost, the numbers of traffic
incidents are the results of young people's reckless driving behaviour. Their short-sighted behaviours such
as hosting races or riding a motorbike with more than two people can often be the product of peer pressure or the influence of alcohol. Raising the driving age
, therefore
, can help to prevent these careless drivers from controlling the wheels and posing threats to others, contributing to the improvement of traffic
safety
.
However
, despite the aforementioned benefits, there are more other solutions that are more effective in the long run. Firstly
, since the common causes of traffic
accidents are drinking while driving and driving in the wrong lanes, the government should inflict more severe punishments on traffic
violators such
as longer prison sentences or higher fines which could act as a deterrent to potential offenders. In other words
, if drivers can foresee the severe consequences of their actions, they will be more likely to adjust their driving etiquette. Secondly
, citizens need to undergo more thorough training and extensive tests to ensure that they are physically and mentally fit to operate a vehicle. Age
factor, as a result
, should only be considered one among many determinants.
In conclusion, while increasing the minimum legal driving age
are not without certain benefits, I would contend that its effectiveness pales in comparison with that of other measures and the proposed solutions should be implemented to ensure road safety
