The two graphs illustrate the trend of owning electrical equipment and the hours spent per week doing housework by each
household
from 1920 to 2019. The
first
chart shows that electric appliances
such
as washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners have become more popular from 1920 to 2019. In 1920, no
household
had refrigerators but in 2019, these were owned by almost every
household
. Similar is the trend with vacuum cleaners which increased from 30% in 1920 to 100% in 2019. A gradual increase is seen over the years in the ownership of washing machines i.e., 40% in 1920 to approximately 75% in 2019. Refrigerator utilisation was at a minimum in 1920 but became the highest after 1960 till 2019. The
second
chart depicts the no. of hours spent by each
household
on a weekly basis on housework
such
as washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning. The data shows that amount of hours spent on housework has declined from 1920 to 2019 from 50% per week per house to 10% per week per house. Overall, we observed that the usage of electrical appliances has increased from 1920 to 2019 and
as a result
, the amount of time utilised in
household
work has declined.
