in 2018, people’s spending was more spread out into different areas.
Looking into the data in more detail, one can see that in the 60s, people spent most of their income on food which consumed 35% of their weekly income. Followed by housing and the area of clothing and footwear, both accounted for 10% of their income.
In 2018, the expenditure on food dropped remarkably from 35% to around 16%. Spending on clothing, footwear and personal goods was halved before. However
, housing expenses expanded significantly by approximately 20% in the 50 years. Leisure became more critical in people’s lives, and people's spending on leisure rose more than double in 2018.
