The
extinction
of some
plants
and
animals
is believed by some to be the main
problem
of our time.
However
, others argue that there are other more important global concerns. I am convinced that the
extinction
of
plants
and
animals
,
as well as
other global issues, are equally important.
From
one
perspective, the
loss
of plant and animal
species
does cause a number of problems. Starting with the
extinction
of
plants
,
this
would definitely spoil the ecosystem. For
one
thing,
plants
naturally purify the air by means of photosynthesis, in which carbon dioxide is turned into oxygen.
This
feature of
plants
helps to reduce harmful gases from the air and makes it fresh and healthy.
Thus
, their
extinction
would bring a rise in the toxicity of the air, eventually damaging the ecosystem.
Moreover
,
plants
also
serve as food sources for herbivore
animals
such
as goats and cows. The disappearance of plant
species
is,
therefore
, likely to cause the deaths of herbivores as well, which means that the
loss
of
plants
is indeed a serious concern.
Likewise
, losing animal
species
is
also
detrimental.
One
possible deleterious impact would be seen in the food chain and the balance in nature. A case in point is the
extinction
of a
species
called the Tasmanian tiger, which preyed on wombats in Australia. The
extinction
of the animal resulted in the population burst of the wombat, which damaged vast acres of croplands.
However
, there are
also
other equally important global issues.
One
of them is global warming. If not given decent attention,
this
problem
can put the existence of all
species
at risk of
extinction
. Humanity has already witnessed some devastating phenomena resulting from climate change in the form of floods in coastal cities and frequent forest fires, which take away millions of
lives
mercilessly.
In other words
, similar to the
problem
of
plants
and
animals
’
extinction
,
this
problem
is so serious that it can put an end to the
extinction
of many
lives
on Earth. Another serious global
problem
is the depletion of natural
resources
such
as fossil fuels and potable water. These
resources
are crucial to sustaining our own
lives
and those of
plants
and
animals
.
While
we rely on
resources
to run industries and consume,
plants
and
animals
also
need water for their survival; meanwhile, the
resources
are becoming increasingly scarce.
This
highlights that the
loss
of these
resources
is a serious issue that can
also
end life on the planet.
Having considered the issue from both angles, I believe that problems
such
as global warming and the
loss
of
resources
are as important as the
loss
of some
species
of
plants
and
animals
, as all of them are likely to pose serious threats to the
lives
of people on Earth.
