Changes in ownership of appliances and the number of hours dedicated to the related housework each week over 1920 to 2019

The graphs provided illustrate the changes in
ownership
of
appliances
such
as washing
machines
, refrigerators and
vacuum
cleaners
, and the number of hours dedicated to related
housework
each week from 1920 to 2019. The number of households owning electrical
appliances
has increased over the century.
Ownership
of refrigerators rose sharply from 1920 to 1960 before slowing down in the following 20 years and experiencing a plateau afterwards. Meanwhile, household
ownership
of washing
machines
and
vacuum
cleaners
increases more steadily. Between 2000 to 2019, the trend of households owning washing
machines
stopped growing. For
vacuum
cleaners
, a small decline in household
ownership
can be observed between 1960 to 1980 before continuing to increase after that. One can argue that electronic
appliances
such
as washing
machines
, refrigerators and
vacuum
cleaners
enabled the related
housework
to be done faster.
This
is because
housework
in 2019 required significantly less time at 10 hours per week to complete, compared to those in 1920 at 50 hours to complete.
As a consequence
, increased
ownership
of household
appliances
corresponds to reduced time spent on
housework
.
