Modern technology, such as personal computers and the Internet, have made it possible for many people to do their work from home at least part of the time instead of going to an office every day. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of this situation?
There have been numerous arguments as regards the impact of recent technology like private computers and the use of the web in making it easier for a large population of the populace to do their jobs. The thought of personnel working from their personal space could create two different outcomes for a company. The positive standpoint sells the belief of the crew having to do work from their abode which bothers on the fact that it's conducive and helps to reduce expenditure. Coincidentally, the belief can degenerate to the workforce being complacent in doing the job for which he or she has solely been employed to do.
More so , having to operate the office from one's house gives room for the person to have a relaxed mind and a stress-free life. It gives room and opportunity to combine both the individual's job and family activities together to achieve great results on both ends. Looking at the survey from the Punch newspaper which is one of Nigeria's daily newspapers gave a statistic that 80% of people that operate from their quarters during the covid-19 pandemic gave their several companies huge results.
Alternatively, the feeling of doing tasks from your lodge using several modern gadgets to perform their duties gives a large space for complacency on the part of the team. A study that was carried out by the University of Ibadan in 2016 showed poor performance in the deliveries of crew of the Federal Ministry of Communication whose employees were given the freedom to work from their several locations came back having a 70% drop in their deliveries. The notion of personnel having to do his or her daily business from the lodge that the individual sleeps and wakes up creates room for the personnel to be doing multiple jobs which results in lapses in performance which affects the output.
Conclusively, recent technologies like computers and the web have had an influence on the decision of several employees to do jobs from their residence which has had their pros and cons. The notion of a worker having to perform daily activities from their house suits most of the general populace because of the above-mentioned reason like reducing expenditure and fewer people having a negative perception because it might lead to complacency. In my own opinion, I would value my comfort since it would afford me the benefit of saving amount on transport and reducing my budget on transport.
