bar graph illustrates approximate global illiteracy percentages
according to
geographical area and gender for the latest year.
It is clear that
some areas have much higher portions than other countries that are able to read and write. In general, most in all regions of the world men have higher illiteracy rates than female. It is interesting to note that the figure for women's illiteracy rates in South Asia contains roughly 56%.
In contrast
, the proportion of females in developed countries is much better at approximately 2%. From the given chart, it can be seen that in Arab States and in Africa nearly half of the women are unable to write. The rates of both genders are almost similar in the Caribbean.
However
, the ratio of illiterate women in Oceania is
also
double that of men.
