Some people think getting old is bad for them in the modern world, while others think older people today live better than in the past. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

When it comes to the issue of the living standards of the elderly, there are differing opinions. Some argue that they are unable to adapt to the modern world,
while
others believe that their lives have improved compared to the past.
While
it is true that the elderly face certain challenges, I firmly believe that they can achieve a higher living standard. Admittedly, older individuals may encounter a range of difficulties in

modern society. The widespread use of mobile phones,
for instance
, has become almost indispensable in urban areas.
However
, it is extremely challenging for the elderly to operate a mobile phone like a young adult. The small size of mobile phones makes it difficult for them to see clearly, and the complex procedures can be overwhelming given their poor eyesight and declining memory.
Additionally
, the demands of modern life often lead to a lack of time for the children of older individuals to provide adequate companionship and care, resulting in feelings of loneliness and even depression.
On the other hand
, the elderly
also
enjoy an array of welfare and well-being that was unimaginable in the past.
Firstly
, advancements in medical treatments have enabled older people to receive more efficient and effective healthcare.
For instance
, heart diseases that were previously untreatable now have innovative therapies and medications available.
Secondly
, there are increasing services catered specifically to the elderly. They can reside in specialized aged-care facilities with professional nursing assistance, where they have the opportunity to make friends with others of similar ages and experience a greater sense of belonging.
Lastly
, governments have implemented new laws and regulations to provide more care for the elderly. By paying relevant insurance premiums, older people are entitled to a certain amount of pension.
Additionally
, public transportation often offers reserved seating and special discounts for older individuals, reducing their cost of living and demonstrating societal concern. In conclusion, despite some inconveniences that the elderly may encounter, I believe that they can achieve a higher living standard in modern cities.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Summary
  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

Example:

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Start your conclusion with a linking phrase. Here are some examples:

  • In conclusion
  • To conclude
  • To summarize
  • Finally
  • In a nutshell
  • In general
