IELTS Writing task 2: Scientific research should be carried out and controlled by private companies rather than governments. Do the advantages of this situation outweigh the disadvantages? Write an essay with at least 250 words

The question of whether scientific
research
should be conducted and controlled by private companies
instead
of governmental bureaus has sparked a lively debates.
While
there are both advantages and disadvantages of privately-based studies, I contend that the disadvantages can surpass its advantages. On the one hand,
this
can bring a benefit regarding the expense if scientific
research
is undertaken by private businesses. In fact, private corporations often possess substantial financial resources, enabling them to do
research
more efficiently and rapidly.
Moreover
, private funding can relieve the burden on government budgets, freeing up resources for other essential societal needs.
On the other hand
, privately-funded scientific
research
may cause considerable concerns. First and foremost, the pursuit of profit may lead to a focus on
research
areas that promise immediate financial returns, potentially neglecting less profitable fields but for social gains
such
as anthropology, geography, sociology or psychology.
Additionally
, private control may limit public access to
research
findings and lack a guarantee of the quality. Proprietary interests could lead to limited accessibility potentially withholding significant breakthroughs from the wider scientific community.
Conversely
, government-funded
research
is more likely to prioritize open access, which enables researchers to give peer reviews and the quality of these studies can be scrutinized. In conclusion,
while
private companies' involvement in scientific
research
is cost-efficient, the potential drawbacks cannot be ignored.
Therefore
, a balance between private and government control may be the most prudent approach for the betterment of the society.

Word Count

IELTS says that you should write a minimum of 250 words in writing task 2. If you go under word count you will lose marks in task response.

A very long essay will not give you a higher band score.

Aim for between 260 to 290 words in writing task 2. This will ensure a concise essay and will be realistic in terms of time management. You have only 40 minutes to write the essay and you need around 10 minutes of planning time, so you will not be able to write a long essay in 30 minutes.
