Your mentor recommended you to learn a new language and gave you contact details of a teacher. Following his advice, you need to write a letter to the teacher and say: •What is your motivation to learn a new language •How can the teacher help you •When you will be ready to start

Respected Mr Woods Hope
this
letter finds you in good health. I recently had the good fortune of meeting my old mentor Dr Dre at a social soiree in november
this
year. I narrated to him the happenings in my life over the
last
1 year and my desire to study in Germany for a few months. He suggested that before making the shift, it would be useful to learn
German
. He fondly remembered you as a dear friend and a wonderful teacher of the
German
language
. On his advice I'm writing
this
letter to you, hoping you would take me on as a student and help me master the
language
. I must tell you that Germany as a nation has fascinated me for a long time. Not only is it a diverse nation, geographically
as well as
culturally. It is
also
a worldwide leader in science and technology. It has many well-known universities, the most notable being the University of Mainz, which does cutting-edge research in shipbuilding. As I am an engineer by profession, with a keen interest in ship making, I believe Germany is the ideal choice to
further
my skills.
However
, as Dr Dre rightly said, one cannot make great strides in a foreign land without knowing the
language
of the people. Having proficiency in the
German
language
will not only help me integrate with the locals but
also
make it easier to navigate public transport, make new friends and carry out day-to-day communication with ease. If you are willing, we could start with one-hour lessons each day for one month virtually, and in my opinion,
this
would help me get a working knowledge of the
German
language
. I require only a basic knowledge of the
language
and from what I have heard from Dr Dre you are the ideal teacher to accomplish the same. If you agree I would like
to begin
the lessons from the 1st of

2023 and continue for at least the next month. Hope you will consider my humble request and consent to teaching me. Regards  Surabhi

Task Achievement
To further improve your task response, make sure every part of the task is addressed equally. While the letter details your reasons for learning German well, a bit more emphasis on how specifically the teacher can assist (beyond scheduling lessons) could make your response more complete.
Coherence & Cohesion
For coherence and cohesion, try to make transitions between paragraphs smoother by using connecting words or phrases that signal the shift from one idea to another. This will enhance the flow of your letter.
Task Achievement
Additionally, maintaining a slightly more formal tone uniformly throughout the letter, including the greeting and closing, would improve uniformity in tone, aligning it with the formal context of writing to a potential teacher.

Structure your letter

A letter needs to be written using a proper format, including the following:

  • A greeting (Dear sir/madam, Dear John, Dear Mr. Smith)
  • The main body (consisting of paragraphs for each part of the letter)
  • A closing (Yours sincerely, Yours faithfully, Best wishes, Kind regards, Love)

When writing a letter as part of the IELTS General Training Writing Task 1, it is important to include the bullet points presented to you in the question.

All three bullet points need to be presented. And remember that some bullet points contain more than one element. So, make sure to watch for ‘and’ and plurals.
