Some people claim than not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement. To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Many individuals argue that we are not recycling an adequate amount of
waste
. They
also
provide the view that, to raise the recycling rate it is essential for governments to make
people
legally required to participate. In my opinion legislation is not necessary at all. It is my view that,
instead
of passing some
laws
to compel
people
to recycle, we should raise public awareness about environmental issues and encourage
people
to recycle more of their household
waste
. I believe, children from an early age must be taught to recycle and reuse useful materials and companies should
also
make goods that
last
longer.
Moreover
, we should reduce the amount of
waste
we produce which is a result of our consumer culture.
For example
, if something in our house breaks, we throw it away and buy a new one
instead
of repairing it.
In contrast
, some
people
claim that governments should be stricter about
waste
recycled by
people
. They firmly insist that authorities should put legal limits on recycling,
otherwise
,
people
will not care enough about the consequences of
waste
problems.
However
, I do not find
this
argument convincing because there is evidence that if
people
are obliged to do something they will find some way to avoid it,
therefore
,
laws
are not a convenient way to address
this
issue. From a social standpoint, encouraging
people
by involving them in cultural and environmental activities would be more effective than forcing them to recycle by strict
laws
. In conclusion, I completely disagree with requiring
people
to recycle by some
laws
regarded to it because it is an undeniable fact that
people
will not appreciate compulsion and raising their awareness about recycling will definitely be more efficacious.

Support ideas with relevant, specific examples

Examples make your writing easier to understand by illustrating points more effectively.

When giving examples it is best to put them after your main idea or topic sentence. They can be used in the middle of supporting sentences or they can be used to start a new sentence. There is no rule for where exactly to give examples in essays, logically they would come after your main idea/topic sentence or just after a supporting sentence.

Linking words for giving examples:

  • for instance
  • to illustrate this
  • to give a clear example
  • such as
  • namely
