write a referral letter to an orthopedist
I am writing to refer Mrs. Carol Potter, a 70-year-old patient, who presented with progressive mechanical left
knee
pain
, which has been started last
year and got worse 2 days back. Based on recent X-ray findings she needs your further
investigation regarding to final diagnosis and the total knee
replacement therapy requirement.
Mrs. Potter came to our clinic with severe left knee
pain
and limitation of motion. Her pain
has not improved despite using the painkiller regularly. She mentioned her pain
even has been continuing at rest after prolonged walking. She complained of milder right knee
pain
with the same quality. Left knee
physical examination showed a joint line tenderness and a limitation of motion as well. She was diagnosed with knee
osteoarthritis last
year and has been managed with Panadol as she needs.
I requested the knee
X-ray and blood tests for more evaluation. The imaging showed an osteophyte formation and a joint space narrowing, which is consistent with the diagnosis of severe osteoarthritis. Physiotherapy sessions were arranged and naproxen was started to reduce her pain
and discomfort
Given the above information, I would appreciate it if you could see Mrs. Potter for better management and evaluation of the need for a total knee
replacement as you deem appropriate.
Yours sincerely,
