Some people think that it is a waste of time for high school students to study literature, such as novels and poems. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

While
nobody can deny the importance of
education
, especially in high school, some argue that studying literature,
such
as novels and poems, is a waste of
time
for our
children
. I strongly agree with
this
statement because of the importance of other science subjects.
Education
is considered one leg society stands on, where the nation’s development will depend on the
education
outcomes.
Therefore
, it is recommended to shift our focus on teaching scientific
topics
in high schools rather than literature
topics
,
this
will improve the knowledge of our
children
in these critical
topics
, which will eventually benefit the community by having more doctors and engineers.
For instance
, the Ministry of
Education
in Egypt established a new policy in their schools, when the country was suffering from a shortage of doctors. The Ministry of
Education
has reduced the
time
allocated for studying literature and increased the
time
for teaching medical sciences for the ninth and tenth grades
such
as mathematics and biology.
As a result
of that, they found out after 20 years that they have enough clinicians in their country. Another factor worth mentioning is the
future
of our students, and there is a question that arises, why should we spend so much
time
teaching our
children
subjects that will not benefit them in their
future
jobs? Poetry, in my opinion, could be learned as an extracurricular activity for those students who have a passion to be a poet. Most
children
should be taught necessary lessons that will have an impact on their
future
careers. A great example of
that is
my brother, who taught in his school about mathematics in detail, and that led him to be a lecturer at a well-known university in London, and because of the high salary he receives from his university, he bought a new house and lives a life free from economic difficulties. Considering the matter in depth, it seems reasonable to say that
education
is the key to our student's
future
, and wasting our
children
’s
time
in learning unessential
topics
such
as novels should be avoided.
