A glance at the table provided reveals the proportion of three age groups in the total population Of Japan country during the period from 1960 to 2040. In general, Japan will encounter senility in its demographic trend in the foreseeable future. It is evident from the information supplied that people aged between 15 and 46 comprised the highest number of Japanese populations which was 65% in 1960 and peaked at 75% in 1990.
However
,
due to
a dramatic decline of people in
this
age group in 2000, to 61% it has been predicted that their proportion will continue to decrease reaching 55% in 2040. Yet, by far the significant change to take place during
this
period was an increase in the number of over 65 population. Having comprised a mere 5% of the total Japanese population in 1960, it not only soared to 20% in 2000 but has been estimated to reach 50% in 2040. In stark contrast,
however
, the fertility rate experienced a downward trend.
Although
it was 30% in 1960, it decreased to 20% in 2000 expecting to plunge to just 5% in 2040.
