Fresh water reserves are becoming less worldwide. What are the reasons for this? What are the solutions that can be done by countries and individuals?

A recent paper published by Worldbank suggested depletion of fresh
water
reserves around the globe at the rate of 7% per year. It is being speculated that at
this
rate, 80% of the earth will be devoid of drinkable
water
by the year 3100.
This
decline can be attributed to the fact that over usage, unchecked wastage and increase in pollution leading to contamination have shrunk the overall pool of useable
water
. If no extreme steps are taken immediately to stop
this
decrease, we can anticipate a world war on
water

the water
soon. Wastage is the root cause of decrease in clean
water
reservoirs because of an innate belief that
water
will never deplete and
hence
taking it for granted. It is not uncommon to find tap
water
open, especially in households/restaurants even when not in use. In developing countries spillage of
water
on roads is a common sight. Since the government provides free
water
to agricultural lands in India, over usage becomes a mandate in the minds of farmers because no one is paying for the
water
that is
being used in abundance. Another factor that plays a pivotal role in shrinkage of
water
reservoirs is the increasing level of pollution in
water
contributed by manufacturing factories and homes. In underdeveloped countries, it is a prevalent practice to dispose industrial as well as household waste in
water
bodies lending these areas contaminated and unfit to use. Over the years, due to lack of stringent laws, industrial waste has always found its way into landfills and
water
reserves and

Regulation

Regulatory
authorities need to place stringent laws in place to penalize those found guilty.
For instance
, implying hefty fines on those found using more that required amount of
water
per month and those found polluting the clean
water
. Committees need to be formed in every district that should monitor and protect the available usable
water
and a detailed report should be sent every month to the central department highlighting major challenges and concerns.
Also
, authority should plan to have awareness campaigns to instill the thoughts of reducing wastage in the minds of public. At an individual level, one should keep a tab on

by closing the tab when not in need, avoiding showers and using buckets for taking bath. As responsible
