Modern communications mean that it’s no longer necessary to write letters. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
A few years ago, people used to send
letters
for communication
purposes. Technology has been extremely evolved during the past years and as a consequence, it replaced letters
with more efficient methods, such
as the Internet. A lot
of advantages are derived from the use of modern means of communication
, that pertain to environmental and practical issues.
In the past, a massive number of letters
was written and sent across the globe and as a result
, a lot
of sources, such
as paper, were used solely for communication
purposes. Sending letters
has a huge impact on the environment, deteriorating the global warming phenomenon. According to recent studies, paper production has been reduced because of technology evolvement, which means that fewer trees are cut nowadays. In addition
, there are also
some practical issues that modern communications have solved. The time for message transition has been zeroed, making much easier real-time communication
between people around the world.
In contrast
, there are also
some clear drawbacks of modern communications. It has been proved that the use of modern communication
systems, such
as cell phones, have negative implications on our health. This
is the main reason that even if there are many advantages of them, a lot
of people avoid them, preferring sending letters
.
It is obvious that there are a lot
of reasons why to use modern technological communications, but there are also
some drawbacks concerning health problems. In general, owing to the ease that technology has brought to us, I agree that sending letters
instead
of emails or making calls, is not necessary.Submitted by patelbhoomi168 on

The Greeting
Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.
Always start an informal letter in the ways:
- Dear + name
- Hi / Hello + name
‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.
For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:
- Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
- Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.
