Solar energy is becoming more and more popular as a source of household energy in many countries around the world. Why is this? What are the advantages and disadvantages of solar energy?

Electricity
has been merge with our daily life ever since it was invented. With the trend of saving the earth, renewable
energy
has become popular being the major source of power for households around the world. Why did we shift our source of
energy
from non-renewable to renewable
energy
? Well, it is obvious.
Energy
production from non-renewable sources like coal and petrol will be difficult to get shortly. Because of the continuously reducing supply of reserves and the high costs quoted by the regions which hold their reserves. Given
this
, countries have been putting efforts into developing renewable sources of
energy
. With abundant sunlight, solar
energy
has become a better alternative to other forms of
energy
. Solar
energy
has its pros and cons. In my opinion, the cons overweigh the pros. An advantage of solar
energy
is that it can be harnessed without having to build expensive power plants
such
as windmills or equipment for geo-
energy
.
For instance
, families can install solar
panels
on their roofs and generate an adequate amount of
energy
to run the household appliances
such
as lights, fans, heaters, refrigerators. It is clean and does not pollute the land or the air. Unlike coal-generated
electricity
which exhales harmful gases, leading to global warming.
On the other hand
, solar
energy
panels
come with their price which is unaffordable to the underdeveloped and developing countries around the Equator. These are the region that benefits most from solar
energy
owing to their geographical location. In the developed western world the situation is quite the opposite. These places are cold and receive only a small amount of sunlight.
Consequently
, not much solar
energy
can be generated there. Asides, not all places are suitable to install solar
panels
.
For example
, utmost of the buildings in Hong Kong are tall.
As a result
, not all families can enjoy
electricity
generated by solar
panels
. Only those residential buildings that are a few stories high can be able to install solar
panels
and share within families. In conclusion, solar
energy
is gaining popularity because it is safe and clean.
However
, there is still a long way to go to make it our major
electricity
source.
