Some people argue that capital punishment is a brutal decision and should be abolished. Do you agree or disagree?

People have different views about the death
penalty
as some think that it is a ruthless judgement and should be discontinued.
However
, in my opinion, I believe that the death
penalty
should remain because not only can it serve as a deterrent to serious crimes but it
also
means that taxpayers’ money won’t be spent on taking care of the criminals, who have committed serious crimes, for
life
. My
first
reason against the idea of capital punishment’s discontinuation is that, as the most severe form of punishment, it serves as a warning to those contemplating serious crimes. To
further
explain, with death as a possible consequence as opposed to a
life
sentence, one may be more discouraged to break the law. While
this
may not completely prevent atrocious offences, if imposed strictly, the severity of the
penalty
will certainly strike fear in the minds of some offenders. Another justification for the existence of capital punishment is that it is a cheaper approach in comparison to a
life
sentence. As we are all aware, state penitentiaries are financed by taxes. Without a doubt, sustaining the
life
of a serious offender for decades costs significantly more than ending it. To
further
explain, the costs mentioned here include room and board, medical care, facility maintenance, and etc. It is obvious that taxpayers’ hard-earned money is better spent elsewhere.
For instance
, the state can use the money to improve and maintain various infrastructures or other issues related to the well-being of the public. In conclusion, though capital punishment may appear to be a cruel and inhumane act when only the nature of the
penalty
itself is scrutinized, I believe that
such
a sentence should not be abolished due to the purposes it serves.
