Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer. Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter: • suggest how you could help her in her home • say why you would like to do this work • explain when you will and will not be available

Dear Mrs Barrett, I am contacting you about the advertisement I saw in the local paper. In case you need assistance with gardening, I can provide you with my professional knowledge in

agricultural industry, and over a dozen positive feedbacks from my previous clients whose gardens I tend to. The entire process of seeding, nurturing, and harvesting is more than impressive from my point of view, and I would like to share pieces of my knowledge with other people interested in the field. Of course, there are moments when exceptional care is needed, which I am more than happy to provide. I would like to inform you that because of my working schedule, my visits will occur mostly in the early mornings, which is good for watering the plants. On the weekends I will be able to come in the afternoon, with some exceptions on Saturdays or Sundays. I will always let you know on time. Let me know if you find the offer acceptable. Sincerely, Novena Rankovic

Structure your letter

A letter needs to be written using a proper format, including the following:

  • A greeting (Dear sir/madam, Dear John, Dear Mr. Smith)
  • The main body (consisting of paragraphs for each part of the letter)
  • A closing (Yours sincerely, Yours faithfully, Best wishes, Kind regards, Love)

When writing a letter as part of the IELTS General Training Writing Task 1, it is important to include the bullet points presented to you in the question.

All three bullet points need to be presented. And remember that some bullet points contain more than one element. So, make sure to watch for ‘and’ and plurals.
