Modern communications mean that it’s no longer necessary to write letters. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Undoubtedly, along with the development of technology, more and more
people
tend to use online communication methods
. In this
regard, mobile phones have become an indispensable part of our lives while letters
have lost their popularity in recent years. From my standpoint, although
online methods
are much more convenient, letters
are a better way to express emotions.
From one point of view, the benefits of modern communication technology are inevitable. Many people
use these online systems to get in touch with their family or friends who live apart so they can keep updated whenever they want without waiting weeks for letters
. Additionally
, businesses use these systems to communicate with their partners online which is a more accurate way of transferring knowledge. Plus, sending letters
could be considered as time and money consuming since a sender should go to the post office and pay fees to send written letters
whereas by the online system it can be sent in a second
.
From another point of view, letters
always have a special place in communities since this
is a better way of explaining thoughts and feelings. Also
, every person has unique handwriting which explains a lot about the individual's personality so it is recommended that people
write letters
to their loved ones. Last
but not least, it can be considered as a less intrusive method to communicate since it takes time to receive a response. Therefore
, people
who are shy or introverted may choose traditional methods
over modern technology.
To put it in a nutshell, with respect to the whole views mentioned above, both methods
have their own advantages. Although
the majority of the people
mainly prefer online communication tools, letters
always have their own special place in societies.Submitted by dornasadeghi912 on

The Greeting
Depending on the style and aim of the letter, you will need to adapt your greeting.
Always start an informal letter in the ways:
- Dear + name
- Hi / Hello + name
‘Dear...’ is more appropriate, so stick with this.
For a formal letter there are two options for the greeting:
- Use Dear Sir or Madam if you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to.
- Use Dear + surname if you do know their name, e.g. Dear Mr Smith or Dear Mrs Jones.
